My final product will be an artwork that is made out of flower petals. According to Lim Zhi Wei is a Singapore based Malaysian artist who uses flower art,
I ask her about these questions along with the answers:
- What kind of flowers do like to use? Why? I started using flowers from my grandmother's garden, wild leaves in the part etc. And I tried planting orchids in my garden as well. But most of the exotic and vibrant flowers are bought from the florist.
- What type of flowers is the most suitable for an artwork? There is no specific type of flower best to use, it really depends on what you would like to develop for each artwork. You have to understand each and every material you are experimenting. For example, orchids are very durable while gerbera doesn't last too long especially in tropical climate.
- How do you preserve the flower to stay in that color/shape? At times, I will press some of the rare petals I have collected in between dictionaries for weeks. Recently, I was learnt there are semi permanent flowers available in the market. They could last up to 3 years.
- How do you stick the flowers together? Do you use glue? I usually avoid glue. The flowers are lied on a piece of paper. For permanent paintings, I sew the artificial flowers onto the canvas.
- What colors do you think should be maintained in an artwork? Why? I believe that the rainbow is the artist's palette.
Her answers really help me decide what will be my final product. So again, I surveyed this several questions to 20 SPH students and teacher. Below are the results I got which are in form of graphs:20
So by this survey as well as interview, it tells me what roses are most known for the people. So for my final artwork, I will be sewing the flower onto the canvas. I believe I will be using the color red for my artwork, because it is the color that grabs people's attention, yet the color red symbolize many things, but I wanted to focus on energy and love. I will also will be focusing on the painting content as the survey tells me so.
