Reflection - How this field trip has changed my perspective about Environments?
1. Since you commenced this unit, describe the ways in which your own perspective has changed regarding the environment you studied.
As I travel to Padang, there are many ways in which my perspective has changed. I’ve never been to Padang before, and I thought that Padang is a beautiful city with unique buildings and breathtaking tourist attraction. With smaller amount of population Padang has compared to Jakarta, what I can think of Padang is that the city is still close with nature, which the air has not polluted badly. But as I got there, it is a beautiful city but unfortunately there was garbage all over the place; streets, trees, and rivers. But the people there did not really take care about it. My perspective Padang is how the people there did not really care about the environment. The air in there is badly polluted as they got the smoke from Riau, and it is even worst that the society burn their trashes and throw them to the rivers. I think that the government did not really is taking care of the surrounding the society live in, as in Jakarta the government shows how they try to get rid of the trashes and keep Jakarta clean. The pollution in Padang that kept on growing continuously can be stopped if the each of the people know what they should do, because then every action does affect the changes in environment.
2. Why is it important to understand how different people perceive the environment? Clue: our perceptions lead to our decisions...
It is important to understand how different people perceive the environment. Each of us has different ways of thinking and the way we see things could affect how we act to our surrounding. In which by that, we should have the wisdom to choose between what should we do good for the environment and what should not. Without having our mind open, they people would not know what the consequences will be in the future if they keep on throwing trash randomly.
Our world have limited sources, and if the people did not take care of it then it would not be suitable for us anymore.
3. What does the Bible say about how mankind ought to related to the environment?
We should take care of our surroundings as written in Genesis 2:15, “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work with it and take care of it.” This verse relates to the problems, which it means how people should work with the resources given from our environment, but we shall not be greedy which we should take care of it. “You shall not pollute the land in which you love… You shall not defile the land in which you live, in which I also dwell; for I the LORD dwell among the Israelites” (Numbers 35:33-34). From this verse it tells us how we should not contaminate our land with any kind of waste or trashes, but we should take care of it because this world belongs to God and everything in it is His creation. From these two verses, God has asked the writers of the passage to write down what He wants His creation (human) to act towards the environment. It says that the world is given to us, and that we should take care of it. We should not pollute the world we live in because it is God’s creation, and all of God’s creation should be guarded. There should not be any distraction or riot among us because God live between each and every one of us. We should take care of our environment God have given to us, just like He took care of us.
4. How might you lifestyle and actions impact on your local environment and the global environment?
My lifestyle and actions could impact on my local environment and global environment as we are in globalization era, in which we are all affected to the things that are up to date and new. With people who influence to each other, it also give a big impact towards the environment we live in. It is also a human nature which people are depended to each other. With that, if we had a good perspective on changing the world and make it a better place, we can make a change. We should only be a good role model. For example in a society in Padang, if one person starts doing something good, automatically they will end up doing good together. Small actions will give a big result towards our world.
5. How might you change your lifestyle and actions based on new perceptions of the environment?
I might change my lifestyle and actions based on my perceptions to environment, which we should take care of like God took care of us. I should be the role model in which we need to start from ourselves and spread the positive news to others which will be influenced by us. We should be thankful that we are given the world for us to live and to return the favor to God, we should also take care our gift. Start by small steps, to use less plastic bags, to throw trashes in the bin, not to use un-recycle materials such as styrofoam, and to keep on going green. Because again, small action does affect and could make a big difference towards the world.
