October 2, 2014 - Action about last meeting, Interviewing Pak Benny,
On the last meeting on September 30, Pak David told me to interview Pak Benny about plagiarism, where I was going to imitate one of Lim Zhi Wei ((you can see it here). So on October 2nd, I went to Pak Benny's class and talk about it. According to Pak Benny, there is a term called appropriation. It is a form of art development that were gaining popularity from the mid-20th century until now. It is a use of old painting/ artworks that has been made before that are used for today's artwork. An example from it is pop art. It is a kind of using other people's style for delivering a message to the people now. For example, you are using an object of one artist for the main object. So I asked Pak Benny if it is okay to use that style of artwork, but I am going to draw a different portrait of a person. Pak Benny said that it is okay as long as I can develop something from it that could make it to become my style. If I said that this is my idea before I take a look from those artworks, it is natural to say it, but I should not be confident that it is my idea. We are living in a visual art world, where everything is visual. We are bombarded from it, because in subconscious we are actually influenced. So, there should be an acknowledgement why I have to cite where I got the pictures and idea from. But still, I need to develop the idea and show effort on doing that, because if I only take the references and copying all the things, why would this called a personal project?
From that acknowledgement, I started to think that I would like to change my artwork from drawing portrait to an landscape, where I will be drawing a silhouette of the city of Jakarta. The reason why I would like to change my artwork is because when I need to choose on who I will be drawing, there are millions option that I should select, in which my goal is to show beauty. If I chose one significant person, that would show that I only chose this because that person represented beauty, where there are also other people that has their own beauty. So I chose to draw Jakarta landscape because I would like to show the beauty of the capital city of our wonderful beloved country, aside from all the problems that are in here. I then search for the silhouette on the internet, and started to draw for my design. The pictures below are the pictures and my design for my artwork. I will be showing this design to Pak David on the next meeting.
