March 2-5, 2015 to Jogjakarta
To be grateful, to build empathy, and to present fairness towards other people are the three major things that I learned in my visit to Jogjakarta on March 2-5, 2015.
Non-Governmental Organization is small organization in help to protect the human rights that everyone has. In our visit to Jogjakarta, I discovered new things that helped me widen my knowledge towards human rights violation. I learned that I needed to be grateful for all the things that I have. I discovered that from one of the NGO we visited, which are for the disabled people. The NGO of Pusat Rehabilitasi Yakkum is the one who gathers people with disabilities in developing their purpose of life in developing and helping others. I learned that even disabled people are grateful of their lives in making their lives as a gift to others. Some of the disable people that I visit are capable of the world of physics in engineering, other than that there is also an amputated man who is able to make a handcraft that is sold overseas out of their disability. It shows how we should not look at the people with disabilities in pity, but to look at them as our motivation to be better, to be grateful, as well as to find our purpose of life which is to be a gift to other. This could relate to the Individuals and Society not to discriminate, because those people are the same, they are normal people like us, despite the different appearance they have.
In the NGO for people living with HIV/AIDS, I learned about the things that are significant in building our empathy towards other. In relation to the things I learned in English class, on how a story has the power to affect my perspective and empathy toward myself, that it really does affect my understanding of people who is living in a certain types of disease. From there, I am able to develop in showing empathy to other people. It shows how even people with HIV are surely scared as first when they know it. It shows how people like those are in need of companion. I also learn how to develop a mindset in encouraging, as well as persuading others to give empathy to those that suffer from discrimination because they are living with HIV. From the NGO of Dian Interfidei, I also learned that we should be able to build up the empathy towards the freedom of religion and beliefs.
Fairness is what we wanted all along. To be treated well, not to be discriminated, and to be accepted in the community are the goal that all people have. This connects with one of the NGO that I visited, which is the NGO for people living with HIV/ AIDS in Bethesda Hospital. I learned that one of the speakers, Ragil, opens up by telling us the theory of HIV/AIDS like what people normally do. In that hospital, we interact with him, we shake hands, and we also share our thoughts together. At the end, he told us all that he is living with HIV. He even gave us knowledge how we should not repeat what he had done. That actually warms my heart that even Ragil who surely scared himself is able to stand up, to straighten people’s thinking and to prevent others to do the same mistake as him. I learned that people living with HIV/AIDS are in need of help. They wanted others to accept him, that even Ragil was scared at first discovering that he is HIV positive. They wanted to have fairness in their lives because living with HIV positive are the same people of us, they are in need of support and help of other not to discriminate and to treat and accept them the way they are. This topic can also linked to the NGO of Dian Interfidei how people are fighting over the religion that they have by mocking other’s religion. It is related to the things that I learned in Individual Society that people shoul be able to have the freedom of their beliefs as well as religion.
From our trip to Jogjakarta, I have learned so much regarding to be grateful, to show empathy, as well as presenting fairness towards other. We are surrounded by problems that are linked to the human rights. We should be able to respect other’s human right, to also raise awareness of people’s awareness with the problem we faced in everyday life.
